9. SHY Design Studio
SHY Design Studio is a Glasgow based practice founded in 2018, creating furniture, lighting, and interior objet. The studio works from both a design and artistic perspective, using a narrative driven process to explore their own interpretations of traditional archetypes.
Their practice is closely concerned with the emotional engagement and relationships capable between users and objects. Taking no interest in trends, it is material and process that are inherent to the stories they tell. These narratives are often rooted in design or craft-based histories, resultantly there is a history of furniture, craft and material laced throughout their pieces.
Their work typically uses strong simple forms in engaging, sometimes unconventional ways. Skilled in working across a range of materials they consider to be noble, natural, and sustainable whilst exploring production skills both time honoured and modern.
SHY have exhibited widely in Europe including Salone Del Mobile, Dutch Design Week, London Design Festival and Collect.

Mans first use of the mirror image utilised shallow vessels of water, Perlucio evokes this lost quality. From a distance reflections appear softly distorted and mysteriously out of focus, refracted light creates the shimmer you find looking at rippled water. As you come closer your reflection becomes more regular.
Hand drawn glass, water gilded in pure silver, framed in oxidised lead. The inherent delicacy of these materials allow small disparities to be subtly transferred during individual stages of the making process, resulting in unique pieces that will slowly evolve their patina over many years.

SHY’s 8 collection is hand made in scagliola, traditionally used as a surface decoration. SHY nod to the materials origins, first building their pieces into strong simple architectural forms, before unexpectedly carving into and destructing the surfaces to create new forms and reveal the patterns laced below.
Their technique allows the juxtaposition of the uniform, polished outer surfaces with the open rock like surfaces, again referencing the materials it’s made from. The chippings from one piece are imbedded into consecutive editions, creating a narrative and connection between objects and collectors.
