FRANCES ROSS
Frances Ross’ work explores the intersection of material science and natural forces, from the cosmic to the microscopic. She primarily works with porcelain, a material known for its delicate yet unpredictable nature—translucent and light, but also pliable, volatile, and prone to collapse. Much of her inspiration stems from the states of matter, such as solidity and liquidity, as well as the mysteries of gravity and fluid dynamics.
Ross’ primary technique involves casting, where she frequently incorporates a broader range of materials, including refractory concrete, metals, and oxides. These additions bring their own agency to the process, adding layers of tension, colour and structure to each work.
Frances Ross launched her studio practice in 2019 following a career in industry. She holds a degree in Fine Art and a Masters in Glass and Ceramics from the University of Sunderland.
