By Jamps began their practice in 2022, driven by the realisation that scrap aluminium could be repurposed creatively using the laser cutter. Aluminium quickly became their material of choice, offering versatility and an abundance that allowed them to design through making, embracing a hands-on, experimental approach. Their practice is deeply influenced by a background in speculative design shaped at the Royal College of Art, with inspiration drawn from science fiction, Medieval illustration, and a shared love of nature. Central to their ethos is a commitment to craft, with all their work made entirely by hand.

Their body of work is deliberately varied, united by the use of scrap aluminium and an intentionally free design language. Tom has developed a distinctive casting technique, while Martha has explored weaving and hydroforming metal, with both expanding their repertoire through anodising, laser cutting, welding, and using tools like the English Wheel. Sustainability, experimentation, and a belief in designing through making lie at the heart of By Jamps’ evolving practice.
